Yesterday, President Trump gave the 96th in-person State of the Union address to Congress and to the American people. A tradition which started with George Washington in 1790, and was first called “The State of the Union” in 1934 by FDR, the State of the Union Address satisfied Article II, Section III, Clause I of the U.S. Constitution, in which it states that the President is required to periodically “give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”
Well, yesterday’s SOTU went mostly without a hitch. President Trump gave recognition to one of the last of the famous Tuskegee Airmen, an elite all-African American unit of pilots who fought in World War II, and paved the way for the military’s desegregation in 1948. He welcomed home SFC Townsend Williams from Afghanistan, into the waiting arms of his wife and two children, and announced the awarding of the Opportunity Scholarship to Philadelphia 4th grader Janiyah Davis. He spoke of record-low unemployment, record-high productivity and economic stability, and spoke hopefully of the future of the United States. All-in-all a fairly successful SOTU Address.
That is, however, until right after his address ended, Nancy Pelosi ripped up the President’s speech on live TV. Across the nation and the world, tens of millions of people watched the Speaker of the House, the 3rd most powerful person in the United States, rip up her copy of the President’s address as she stood just behind him.
I feel like I’m joined by many of my fellow Americans when I say that I am embarrassed. For our country, for our countrymen, and for our elected officials. I am embarrassed. Nancy Pelosi, an elected official and Speaker of the House, just did one of the most disrespectful actions I think I’ve ever seen on C-SPAN. Americans who enjoyed the SOTU, the great Americans that President Trump brought recognition to during his speech, and the great news of the current state of the Union. All meaningless to Nancy Pelosi, who rather than welcoming a moment of bipartisanship to celebrate how well her nation is doing with her countrymen and women, chose to quite literally tear up the President’s Address on national television. Americans are shocked and outraged, and the rest of the world is laughing at just how partisan and disunited our nation has become.
With Nancy Pelosi tearing up the SOTU Address on the same day that the DNC completely failed to manage the Iowa Caucuses (which, may I remind everyone, we are STILL waiting on the results nearly 24 hours later), I have to ask: what the heck has happened to the Democratic Party?
Fighting a losing and very unpopular battle of impeachment. Running their 2020 campaigns on giving healthcare to illegal immigrants and breaking the 2nd Amendment. Several Democratic Representatives refusing to even attend the SOTU. The Iowa Caucus shamble that is still ongoing. Now Nancy Pelosi ripping up the SOTU Address. As a liberal and someone who would love to have a Democrat to vote for in the 2020 election, my answer to the question is: the Democratic Party is fundamentally broken. Partisan, unorganized, corrupt, and completely out of touch with what American citizens want.
Nancy Pelosi may have torn up the SOTU Address yesterday, but what she and the rest of the Democratic Party have really been doing, unbeknownst to them, is secure Donald Trump’s victory in 2020 – as well as completely tarnish whatever trust they still held in the eyes of the American people.
